Caño Negro Costa Rica

Caño Negro is the second district of the canton of Los Chiles in the province of Alajuela, North of Costa Rica. The district is 298,52 km² and has an estimated population of 1808 inhabitants (2011). The header is the village of Caño Negro, located about 60 km southwest of Los Chiles, at an altitude of 30 meters. Located on the shore of the lagoon of the same name (one of the largest in the country), which consists of a shallow wetland; account with an area of 800 has, and drains into the cold River and its tributary the Río Mónico. The district is best known for containing within its territory the national wildlife refuge Caño Negro, an important area for the protection of wetlands and wildlife.
